The Pit #2 - Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan
Marine Air Control Group 28
out of Cherry Point, NC
Back in July The Pit received an e-mail from a former Pit Powerlifter, Tony Kenney.
Tony is a Marine stationed in Afghanistan and asked permission to name their
small gym "The Pit" as it reminded him of earlier days when he trained with Dick Conner
on the powerlifting team. We agreed and offered to send some Pit logo shirts. Tony
requested the olive drab green shirts with the original Pit logo. The first 25 shirts
were sent in late July. Tony sent us pictures to share.
Tony is with the Marine Air Control Group 28 stationed at Camp Leatherneck,
Afghanistan. Tony trained at The Pit between 1987 and 1993 and was 13-19 years old.
Tony was the 1992 Teenage National Champion in the 132 weight class at 18 years old.
He also held the same age/weight class State squat record until recently. Tony joined the
Marine Corps in 1995. He says he always wanted to be a Marine. Dick Conner was in the
Navy and talked to him often about the military. Tony says "some of the best memories
of my childhood were working out at that gym (The Pit) and with those people and working
out in the tent reminds me of all that, so I wanted to give it that name".

Here is a picture of the gym. Equipment includes benches, lat pull down machine
and some dumbells. All stuff that some of the Marines in Iraq gave them.
